I recently purchased an original (30-pin) iXY for use with an old (30-pin) iPod Touch and an iPad Mini (Retina) that instead uses a Lightning cable. Rodes web site indicates the 30-pin iXY works fine with Apples 30-pin Lightning adapter cable, and Im happy to report this is accurate (although the adapters connection can be a little finicky). I initially tried the iXY with apps other than RODE Rec LE (Capture Duo, GarageBand). It worked, but the signal was at a very low level, with no gain control available on those apps. Then I downloaded RODE Rec LE. I had the same experience (low level), but RODE Rec LE let me adjust the mic gain. For recording conversation-level audio from a few feet away, the gain has to be at or near its highest setting. Evidently, the iXY ships with its gain at a very low setting (probably not a great idea). In any case, once the gain was set with RODE Rec LE, it is evidently saved in the iXY, as its level is now workable in other apps. Ive since used it successfully with Capture Duo, GarageBand, Arturia, Tascam Portastudio, and Focusrite Tape. The RODE Rec LE interface is a bit clunky; it lacks basic transport controls like rewind to start or forward to end of track, and getting a file out (via iTunes) requires an awkward two-step process, where an audio file has to be created in the app (from your already-recorded and saved audio file!) before it becomes available via file sharing. But I havent experienced any bugs or crashing (albeit with just a half dozen or so short test sessions). Ill probably upgrade to the full version just to have more capabilities within an app that lets me adjust the mic gain, since the mic gain is not adjustable in other apps. It seems many of the negative reviews are from Lav mic owners. I dont have the RODE Lav mic so I cant speak to whether there are issues unique to the Lav mic.
